Support Swanton Pacific Ranch

To provide Cal Poly students, faculty, staff and the public with a unique interdisciplinary environment in which to foster the Learn by Doing philosophy by providing educational experiences on a working ranch, supporting diversified agriculture and forest resources while maintaining the integrity of ranch operations.

How Do California Rangelands Store Carbon?

Do you want to better understand how carbon storage happens in California’s rangelands? The science is evolving, and we are gaining a better understanding of the processes that govern carbon storage. Meanwhile, many ranchers and other land managers are adjusting their practices to better store carbon for many reasons.

During this webinar, participants will improve their understanding of the process of soil carbon storage on rangelands. Leading researchers will present their recent findings. Dr. Wilson will discuss the widespread initiative to improve carbon storage through compost addition. He has found that an increase soil carbon storage depends on inherent soil characteristics. Building on large statewide data sets, Dr. Erika Foster will describe how an improved understanding of soil mineralogy can inform rangeland carbon management and sequestration potential. And, Dr. Yamina Pressler has examined how management (esp. grazing) affects carbon storage. Her presentation addresses the role of soil biota in belowground carbon storage, describing how ecological responses to management relate to soil carbon dynamics in coastal grasslands.
