Burn Planning & Permitting on Private Property Workshop Series

In-Person Workshop Series in Siskiyou County

Friday, September 13th, 1:00-4:30pm & Saturday, September 14th 9am-4:30pm in Yreka, CA.

Friday, October 11th, 1:00pm-4:30pm & Saturday, October 12th 9am-4:30pm in Etna, Ca.

This workshop series is an opportunity to learn about the fundamentals of prescribed fire planning and implementation on private property.

This field and classroom-based workshop is an opportunity to learn about the fundamentals of prescribed fire planning and implementation on private property. Participants will increase their understanding of the burn planning and permitting processes, tools and technology useful in burn planning, resources for burn preparation and implementation, and strategies for implementation. 

Session 1: September 13th and 14th, Yreka, CA 

Session 2: October 11th & 12th, Etna, CA 

It is recommended that participants attend both sessions to build on their learning in different fuel types (oak woodland, grass, and timber). 

This workshop series is targeted to landowners and natural resource professionals, such as RCD employees, watershed council employees, fire department volunteers or staff, or others who may be involved in planning, permitting, funding, implementing, or otherwise supporting landowner-led burning. Additional spots may be filled by Tribal peoples, PBA members and volunteers, or folks pursuing the CARX Burn Boss certification, community members, locals,and students.

Sam Commarto, CARX, Cross Contour Fire

Sam is a planning consultant and CA state-certified prescribed fire burn boss (CARX) who is working to increase the use and understanding of prescribed fire as a management tool for multiple benefits, including wildfire risk reduction. He has planned and implemented prescribed burns throughout Siskiyou county and across the state from Del Norte to Monterey.  

Patty Grantham, Siskiyou Prescribed Burn Association Coordinator, Shasta Valley Resource Conservation District

Patty holds a Bachelor of Forest Science degree from the University of Washington, College of Forest Resources.  She spent more than 40 years working for the US Forest Service in a wide variety of technical and leadership positions.  Patty possesses a deep natural resources management background, with an emphasis on wildfire prevention and response and strategic hazardous fuels reduction planning and implementation.  She currently serves as the coordinator for the Siskiyou Prescribed Burn Association, working to facilitate and support beneficial burning in and around Siskiyou County through education, training, leadership, collaboration, and coordination.

Micheal McGill, Forestry and Fuels Project Coordinator, Shasta Valley Resource Conservation District

Michael holds a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science and Management degree with a concentration in Ecology from the University of California at Davis. He joined the Shasta Valley Resource Conservation District in July of 2022.  Prior work experience includes park operations for the State of California and County of San Mateo, and fire and fuels work with the Six Rivers National Forest and the Trinity County Resource Conservation District.  Michael’s current work responsibilities at the Shasta Valley RCD include supporting the Siskiyou Prescribed Burn Association in addition to leading significant fuels reduction/forest health projects throughout Siskiyou County.
